Using Site Recorder on NAS Courses

NAS Logo

Upgrading from the Student Edition

The Student Edition of Site Recorder 4 (SR4 SE) has now been replaced so should not be used for Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) courses. The full version of Site Recorder running in Demonstration (Demo) mode should be used instead.

The Student Edition of Site Recorder was originally developed for the NAS Part 1 course as it provided the tools for processing survey data as recommended by the second edition of the NAS handbook. At the time the full version of Site Recorder would not run if a software key was not found on the computer so unlicensed copied of the program could not be used at all. Since then the program was modified so that it would work with limited capability if a software key was not connected to the computer. The limited Demonstration (Demo) mode has enough capability to complete all of the tasks in the companion Exercise Book.

NAS Part I Course

For NAS Part 1 courses the full version of Site Recorder running in Demo mode can be used in place of the Student Edition as they both work in the same way.

The additional features in the program can simply be ignored and the Demo version can be used as if it were the Student Edition. However tutors should be aware that some of the participants on the Part 1 courses will explore the other features in the program and like to add simple sketches to their survey points and measurements.

It has found to be helpful to suggest the course participants download a copy of Site Recorder before the course starts as this saves time setting up the computers during the course. The link for the install program for Site Recorder is below, this is unlikely to change so the link can be emailed to the participants:

If the participants are also given the opportunity to go through the Exercise Book in advance of the course then a few may do so. This allows them to become more familiar with the program before the course. This has the advantages that they may get more benefit from the course, they need less help from the tutors and they can help other participants. The link for the Exercise Book is below, this link can be emailed to the participants:

Part III Courses and Training during Fieldwork

The main reason for changing from using the Student Edition to the Demo version was that any Part III training courses or training during fieldwork had to be provided with a set of software keys on loan. Shipping the keys around the world was expensive and the keys could get lost in transit. The change to using the Demo mode version means that these advanced courses can be run by any tutor without the need for software keys for the participants. Now the students can learn to use the full capabilities of Site Recorder as part of a NAS training program at no additional cost.
